Using a URL shortener will save you space when linking in a tweet.

Using a URL shortener will save you space when linking in a tweet.

Adding links to a tweet is a great idea. If you are talking about something that can be further explained or shown on a Web site, you should link to it.

That being said, it isn’t always as easy as copying and pasting a url. Many Web addresses are too long and complicated to use with Twitter’s 140 character limit.

Many people get confused when they see ‘at symbols’ (@), ‘pounds signs’ (#) and RTs attached to other people’s tweets.

These symbols and abbreviations make your tweets behave in different ways, and when used appropriately can be a valuable asset in your Twitter arsenal.

This post covers the use of the retweet (RT.)Retweets are the reposting of a tweet. If somebody sees a tweet that they want to retweet they will copy and paste it and add RT @username to the front of it to acknowledge the original poster.

Retweets are useful because they share specific information with other users. If you see a tweet that tickles your fancy, RT it.

This tutorial is for people that don’t want to deal with managing multiple profiles, yet still want certain content available to some friends and not others. This is accomplished by having multiple friend lists and setting their privacy options for several aspects of your page. It’s a little bit of work, but it can also save you from the hassle of using multiple profiles.

If you don’t have a Facebook page already, please read the previous tutorial called “Facebook: A Basic Guide to Getting Started.” It will take you step by step through setting up your account and some basic privacy settings. It can be viewed or downloaded here, and as always, feel free to comment on any of the posts on the site, especially if you have questions or suggestions.

Twitter: Connecting with your followers 140 characters at a time.

At its simplest, Twitter allows you to connect with friends and let them know what you are doing, or thinking about at any given moment.

At its best Twitter is a research tool for just about anything (and offers nearly real-time data.)

In the coming weeks I will show you the basics of how to use Twitter’s different functions, but for now let’s cover the basics.
